Understanding Meningitis B
Meningococcal group B disease is one of the most common causes of bacterial meningitis in the UK. It can affect anyone, but rates are highest in babies under one, teenagers and young adults — particularly first-year university students living in halls.
How MenB spreads
The bacteria pass between people through close contact — coughing, sneezing, kissing or sharing utensils and drinks. Outbreaks are more common in crowded settings such as universities, festivals and dormitories.
Why you need the MenB vaccine
Bexsero protects against meningococcal group B, which is not covered by the routine MenACWY teenage booster. It is recommended for university entrants, close contacts of cases, asplenic patients, and travellers heading to higher-incidence regions.
Preparing for your appointment
Book at least 2 weeks before you travel or move into halls. Adolescents and adults need two doses at least one month apart. Our pharmacists will review your history, administer the dose, and book your follow-up in a single 15-minute appointment.
Two doses, one month apart — for full MenB protection.
Adolescents (11+) and adults need a 2-dose Bexsero course. Babies follow the NHS schedule at 2 months, 3 months and 12 months — we can also catch up children who missed routine doses.
First appointment
Book any day. Our pharmacist reviews your history and administers your first Bexsero dose.
Dose 2
We send you a reminder. Your second dose completes the primary course and unlocks long-term immunity.
Booster
If you remain at ongoing risk (e.g. asplenia), your pharmacist will discuss timing for any future booster.
Safety, side effects & what to expect
Bexsero has been used in millions of patients worldwide and is approved by the MHRA. Most side effects are mild and resolve within 24–48 hours. Our pharmacists will run through your full medical history, answer your questions, and observe you in clinic after the dose.
- Soreness or redness at the injection site
- Mild fever in younger patients
- Headache or fatigue for 1–2 days
